Our state-of-the-art hospital has 18,000 square feet of space with an on-site digital radiology suite, portable c-arm fluoroscope, a Philips ultrasound unit with cardiac color-flow doppler capabilities, a mobile MRI hook-up, flexible and rigid endoscopes, and off-site access to a CT scanner and linear accelerator. Designed to prepare the intern for entrance into a residency program or a high-quality private practice, the internship will expose the intern to a wide range of emergency and referral cases.

The interns will have hands-on diagnostic and treatment responsibility for cases, as well as be expected to learn all aspects of hospital procedures, including the management of cases, generating appropriate estimates, and communicating with owners and referring veterinarians. The program includes approximately 50% of the time split amongst the specialties of surgery, internal medicine, and critical care, and 50% of the time in the emergency department. A senior clinician supervises all day shifts and they are immediately available to the over-night intern.

Daily patient rounds occur on all services, during which all hospitalized patients and some outpatients are discussed. Each intern is supported by an advisor and is evaluated regularly by the team in the areas of professional performance, communication skills, and progress in the pursuit of knowledge and clinical aptitude. The clinical departments at Vetcision work as a team, therefore, good group interaction and communications skills are essential for the intern’s success.

Opportunities for continuing education include, but are not limited to, daily patient rounds, radiology rounds, and a mandatory weekly lecture series designed specifically for the interns. There are journal club rounds and morbidity and mortality rounds at which interns are also expected to participate. Interns will also participate in a spay/neuter program for area rescue groups at Vetcision. Each intern is required to prepare one lecture (with the assistance of a team member) which will be presented during the internship. A case report suitable for publication is required by the end of the internship. The interns will rotate teaching monthly Pet First Aid classes to the general given in the Vetcision conference room. A library containing periodicals and current text books is in-house and available 24 hours a day, as well as on-line access to a variety of veterinary journals.

Interns must be fully licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the start of the program. The annual salary is $30,000 with bonuses for primary emergency cases. Health insurance, professional liability insurance, and 2 weeks paid vacation are provided.
